Lennan

Portal Tomb

The remains of the portal tomb at Lennan townland are best approached from the roadway to the WSW. The megalithic monument can be seen sticking out from a thorn bush, on the top of a low drumlin ridge. The large pitted capstone is 3.5 metre long and has slipped backwards, it is now resting on what appears to be two large side-stones. In 1835 and again in 1848, the now damaged western side-stone, was recorded to have scribbings on the edge of a fissure on the damaged side. But José did not observe any markings on his visit. The stones lying within the chamber may be field clearance. A nice compact tomb well worth visiting.
